dwp wins Sustainable Interior Design Initiative for Smart Dubai

We are thrilled to announce that we’ve just won the Sustainable Interior Design Initiative of the Year at the CID Awards 2017 for our work with on the Smart Dubai office. The judges notes how the project led to LEED Gold Certification and how sustainability is actually achieved, from the site handling to execution. They also commended the workmanship in the fit-out and the process that took the Smart Dubai Office to completion.

Our senior interior designer Nadine Abedzadeh said of the project, ‘From concept, we thought about sustainability. Our approach started with material selection – everything we used was recycled. It even went as far as when we were looking at MEP and the way in which we have lighting control and chimers to make sure the lights were only used when needed in the night-time, so it’s all really about energy saving.”

Smart Dubai spends each day coming up with initiatives to make Dubai the happiest city on earth. dwp wanted to give them the happiest workplace from which to do it. We’re incredibly proud that we’ve achieved this and been recognised for our sustainability prowess at the same time with this award.

dwp wins the Luxury Residence Global Award for 98 Wireless

We are delighted to announce that we’ve just won the Luxury Residence – Global Award at The International Design and Architecture Awards 2017 for our work on 98 Wireless in Bangkok. The award recognises the ultimate in luxurious residences from across the world.

When designing this now iconic building, we focused on both luxury but also solidity and permanence. It was important that the building had stature. So we evoked the grandeur and timelessness of the European Beaux-Arts style as well as taking inspiration from the great buildings in New York’s fifth Avenue. CNN were so impressed they recently featured dwp on their international ‘One Square meter’ segment – http://cnn.it/2xzuy3I

dwp are proud to be spearhead such a unique and timeless building for Bangkok, and now we’re even prouder to see our work receive this prestigious award.

The Power of Luxury

At dwp we excel at creating places where people want to be, and currently there is an increasing demand to be in luxurious surroundings. One such place is 98 Wireless in Bangkok, the recent winner of the global award for Best Luxury Residence at the The International Design and Architecture Awards 2017. The project was recently featured on CNN’s Square One in this linked article and video .

98 Wireless by Sansiri is a 25-storey high-rise condominium containing 77 luxurious units. Styled and furnished exclusively by Ralph Lauren Home, the residence is regarded as one of Southeast Asia’s most prestigious addresses. It has been equipped with the region’s highest standard in residential living, boasting luxury and class that separates the project from the surrounding modern architecture of Central Embassy, Noble Plenchit, and Park Venture. The classic design of 98 Wireless taken its influence from the beaux arts style, whilst incorporating state of the art technology and sustainable design.

Over the past few years, branded residences have become increasingly popular. People are prepared to pay a premium to live the luxury life. The concept is simple: build a high-end residential project in a desirable location and integrate a luxury brand, celebrity or artist that will attract the target market. With a focus on quality, superior design and service, branded residences have redefined how we create aspirational homes, utilising the luxury and recognition of big name brands to leverage popularity.

We’ve applied these themes across a number of different residential projects in our portfolio. The Alef Residences at The Palm, in Dubai personifies the ultimate luxury of sculptured space and vista. Or the Shanghai Town & Country Club and Residences in Shanghai is a great example of creating a total luxury lifestyle community.

The forecast for the luxury property market is strong. dwp seeks to continuously provide clients with innovative ideas and value added services that will increase the property’s value and aesthetic appeal. We believe that brand experience redefines how developers create aspirational projects, leveraging off the extra concept, lifestyle and services offered by world-famous brands, and we are primed to evolve with this trend.

Healthcare design for five star wellness

Multi-billion dollar medical tourism is driving new design trends, says dwp’s Community Portfolio Director Richard Wood.

Already a $400 billion a year industry, medical tourism is predicted to increase by 25% annually in the next decade.

Bangkok-based Wood says the concept of wellness – which means managing good health rather than dealing with disease – is turning healthcare design on its head. Hospitals are evolving into “spa-like environments as an extension of medical tourism,” Wood explains.

‘A customer stepping on a first class flight doesn’t want to be assaulted with the trauma of accident and emergency,
or the antiseptic smell we expect from hospitals. They want five star treatment.’

This means elegant interiors with welcome lounges and private suites, the careful use of sustainable materials, natural light and plants, views of the outdoors and environmentally-controlled spaces with state of the art technology.

Advancements in technology are also reshaping the design of hospitals. Wood points to Singaporean facilities with “two kilometres of corridors for automated vehicles”. At dwp all our health projects are designed using BIM which means “we identify every single piece of equipment and every person from the moment they step onto the healthcare campus”.

But the speed of technological change demands “agile flexibility” Wood says. “Designs must accommodate flexible and modular plug-in elements and equipment to minimise disruptions.”

All this technology and high-quality design comes at a price, and this is driving the third trend – cost efficiency.

“Governments are increasingly outsourcing healthcare to the private sector, and hospitals have become big business. At dwp this means planning health facilities efficiently and intuitively to maximise financial returns.”

The social benefits of making fitness attractive

Cockburn ARC, Perth, Australia

When it comes to sport and the role it plays in society, what lessons can we learn from other markets? Mike McGrath, dwp’s Sport + Leisure Leader, points to the Cockburn Aquatic and Recreation Centre

When we make a sports venue kids want to spend more time in, it not only makes them healthier in the short term, it sets them up for a healthy adult life and avoids a future cost burden to society. This insight is becoming more apparent globally, where governments need to find solutions to a rapidly increasing child obesity epidemic.

So when it comes to sport and the role it plays in society, what lessons can we learn from other markets? Mike McGrath, dwp’s Sport + Leisure Leader, points to the Cockburn ARC (Aquatic and Recreation Centre), a new AUD$109 million sports complex in Perth designed by dwp, with local architects Sandover Pinder, which opened in May 2017.

The centre incorporates both community and elite sports facilities under the one roof. Aquatic recovery, an altitude chamber and indoor running track offer first class facilities for the Fremantle Dockers AFL football team, while three waterslides and an impressive eight pools attract people of all ages.

McGrath says there are clear design challenges in co-locating facilities. ‘We needed to design spaces that offer elite athletes exclusive access sometimes, but accommodate the public at other times,’ he says. But the result is a building that works harder and delivers greater value for money.

‘It’s about doing more with less,’ adds dwp’s Stephen Cheney. Cheney, who has decades of experience designing community facilities in Australia, says governments are beginning to recognise that ‘investing more money in leisure facilities means less money spent on hospitals’.

The Fleurieu Regional Aquatic Centre in South Australia, also designed by dwp and Hames Sharley, is located in a precinct with nearby medical and aged care facilities. This recognises the direct connection between physical activity and good health.

Cheney says bringing both community and elite sport facilities together offers other ‘social capital benefits’ like community pride. ‘When people rub shoulders with elite athletes it encourages them to be active themselves.’ And it’s this kind of insight that can make getting fit and staying fit all the more attractive.
